NAIROBI, Kenya, May 14 – Five Nairobi County officials have been charged in court over alleged involvement in a Sh18.5 million fraud related to non-existent supplies to the authority.

The officials also faced abuse of office charges when they appeared at the Milimani Law Courts.

They were released on a Sh1 million cash bail and a hearing set for June 19.

The suspects were arrested on Monday evening following an investigation which has been going on since last month.

The investigations were as a result the interdiction of senior county officials over the alleged award of fictitious tenders and subsequent orders from Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero that they be investigated.

In an earlier letter to the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, the governor urged for a dedicated team to dig up the scam that had bedevilled the management of Nairobi affairs.

Kidero had revealed that the companies were notorious in the game of ‘air supply’ and that their directors were also being probed in what he termed as a titanic battle over corruption.

The suspended officers had the delivery receipt books of the suspected contractors and suppliers in their possession, which had been partly used.

The delivery books were being used mainly by the interdicted officers to generate payment vouchers for the suppliers and contractors over non-existent building materials.

Investigations revealed that once the suppliers get Local Purchase Orders (LPO) from the procurement department, they allegedly collude with the officers working at the depot who confirm in their delivery books that the good have been delivered, whereas none has been.
