NAIROBI, Kenya, May 5 – Iran now says linking of its two nationals to a bomb plot in Mombasa was influenced by western nations.

Iran’s ambassador to Kenya Malek Givzad says there was no sufficient evidence against Sayed Mansour Mousavi and Ahmed Abolfathi Mohammed who face sentencing this week after the court ruled they were guilty of possessing explosives.

The two were accused of possessing 15 kilograms of RDX explosives in circumstances which indicated that they were armed with intent to commit a crime in June 2012 at the Mombasa Golf Club on Mama Ngina drive.

Givzad says despite the ruling, the Iranian government will continue to respect the Kenyan judiciary and that the verdict will not sour relations with Kenya.

“There are a number of countries that do not like to see the developing countries working together. The issue of the two people is simply a plot against Kenya and Iran’s good relations,” the ambassador said on Sunday.

“They just see the friendship between the two countries growing and look for accusations against Iran and Iranians.”

Givzad maintained that his government does not in any way support any acts of terrorisms as perceived, adding that his government will continue to collaborate with other nations to fight the spreading vice.

“The same countries, without mentioning names, are trying to accuse others of terrorism, showing self innocence while they are actually the ones behind these issues,” he complained.

A Nairobi court on Thursday ruled that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that two Iranians were part of the group that left the explosive materials at the golf course.

They face up to 15 years in jail which is the maximum sentence for a person found guilty of possessing explosives.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Kiarie Wa Kiarie is expected to deliver his sentence on Monday.
