NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 12 – The Kenya Red Cross Society has received reproductive health kits worth Sh20 million to facilitate the provision of services to displaced populations and emergency situations.

The kits donated by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) include clean delivery kits, rape treatment kits, sexually transmitted infections treatment kits and blood transmission kits among others.

UNFPA Director Benjamin Alli said that the essential drugs supplies and equipment will ensure that the increased risks of maternal, infant mortality and morbidity of HIV infection of sexual violence and other reproductive health related conditions are prevented and managed while upholding humanitarian principles.

“Traditionally, humanitarian responses have focused on food and shelter and far much less on sexual and reproductive health, gender based violence in crisis,” he said.

“In Kenya as a result of the 2007/2008 post election violence and the growing number of internally displaced persons in the country, UNFPA Kenya Country Office expanded its mandate to strengthen sexual reproductive health, gender based violence and HIV/AIDS preparedness and response during disasters through its support to the government and the Kenya Red Cross Society,” he explained.

The Kenya Red Cross Head of Health and Social Services Silvia Khamati said that the kits come at an opportune time when they are assisting those affected by the ongoing floods.

“The kits issued today are of great support to the Kenya Red Cross Society even as we continue to assist those who have been affected by the on-going floods in the country,” Khamati said.

UNFPA has also donated Sh42 million for 2013 fund cycle that will ensure timely and effective humanitarian response by the Kenya Red Cross Society in other emergencies.
