Uhuru, Ruto spell out agenda for Kenya

UHURUTONAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 9 – Soon after taking oaths, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto delivered their maiden speeches in which they assured Kenyans that they will fulfill all their promises.

In his speech, the new president said his government will transform the country within the next 100 days, by turning Jubilee’s election manifesto into a reality.

“We will commit ourselves to uniting Kenyans so that we can fulfill all the pledges that we made to Kenyans. I want to assure you that with God’s help, I have no doubt that we shall be successful in our endeavors,” he stated.

He urged all his opponents to join hands with the new government and bring Kenyans together.

“I would like to thank all my worthy opponents in the recently completed presidential election. Every one of you helped define and make stronger our democracy. Because of you, Kenyans had real choices. Because of you, Kenyans felt free to exercise their sovereign will. Thank you all,” he stated.

He pointed out that in an open and free democracy, there is a vital role for a vibrant opposition that helps to hold the government to account.

“Kenya is such a democracy, and as president I will respect that role just as I will champion the right of every Kenyan to speak their mind free of fear of reprisal or condemnation,” he said.

Ruto on his part thanked Kenyans for overwhelmingly voting them into office and assured that their government is eager to start implementing all pledges made during the campaigns.

“All those who are suffering want to know when is it when they go to a kiosk that the price of maize flour will reduce from Sh100 to Sh60. Those who are unemployed want to know that when is it when the notice board saying there is no work will be removed and replaced with another one saying there are one or two vacancies,” he observed.

Immediate former President Mwai Kibaki in his speech pointed out that he is leaving office confident that he has left the country in the safe hands of Kenyatta and Ruto.

“As I exit the stage of leadership, I have no doubt in my mind that the country is in good hands. In the able leadership of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto, Kenya has a dynamic duo,” he said.

“I believe that the innovation, energy, determination, courage and hard work that they exhibited during the presidential election campaign will be evident in their running of government affairs.”

He stated that the country has experienced considerable gains under the new constitution which was evident in the smooth transition.

“Together, we have traveled along the path of transforming our nation. Today, our children have access to education, millions more homes have clean water, our villages and towns are powered by electricity, the goods and services that we produce are finding their way to markets because of better roads,” he stated.

“The smooth transition we are experiencing today is the product of the many ongoing institutional reforms that we have entrenched in our country. On this occasion, I also bid farewell to you all, after a long and rewarding 50 years of public service. I thank the Almighty God for his guidance and protection throughout this period.”
