Okuta passed away at the Aga Khan Hospital on Tuesday night after developing breathing problems, according to his family.
In a message posted on his Twitter handle @UKenyatta and his Facebook page, the president-elect said: “My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of David Okuta. I pray that God grants you peace, strength and comfort during this time of grief. While serving as the KNUT Secretary General, his zeal and passion in his work exemplified the spirit of a true trade unionist who went an extra mile to defend the rights of all Teachers. You will be greatly missed my brother. May God rest your soul in eternal peace.”
Okuta was described by many as a true patriot by those who reacted to Kenyatta’s message, with recollection that he had been in the forefront in advocating for the rights of teachers and their welfare.
“Kenyans will remember David Okuta as a remarkable man who understood and fearlessly stood for what rightfully belonged to teachers.”
The president elect also added: “Okuta’s zeal and passion in his work exemplified the spirit of a true trade unionist who went an extra mile to defend the rights of teachers.”
Some of Kenyatta’s Facebook followers like Joyce Muthamia said; “Surely the lord gave and has taken, may his name be glorified! Our time on earth is too short and full of pain, but heaven is a resting place! To the family may you be strong and of good courage, peace to overshadow you all as you go this moment of loss.”
Another reads, “Oh, rest in peace Bwana Okuta. Being a teacher we will miss u big. Mr. President, imagine I downloaded the photos u posted when u had gone to visit him in his house.”
Arthur Ogendo reacted on the message saying: “Thank you Uhuru. That’s the spirit of a true statesman. Just stand out tall and prove all the doomsayers wrong. Show them that you are not a Kikuyu president but a Kenyan president. A president for all and a non tribal person. You have made me start to believe we share the same ideals. The ideal of being a neutral statesman. If you keep the spirit then you are my kind of guy.”
“I did not vote for you and have not started liking you so much but that way is better, I wish you portray a national unity and don’t recap your fellow past leaders whose definition of Kenya has been their own ethnic and region, you never know you may even convince some of hardliners like me to support you and we build Kenya. Show the distinction between analogue n digital if indeed you are truly digital,” Raymond Bunachali appealed to the president.
