NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 3 – The police department is now appealing to members of the public to help them stop a wave of crime and killing of officers in the line of duty.

Police Spokesman Charles Owino pointed out that many crimes that lead to loss of lives and property can be prevented if the public gives the police information.

Owino urged the public cooperate with the police, so that they can jointly eliminate crime.

“A lot of information is with you people. Police are your friends and the people you should run to when in need. If only you can give the police the information, we will be able to act fast to curb any ill plans.”

Owino has also defended the use of firearms by police saying some situations call for use of force.

“Police had justifiable reasons of using firearms. You cannot tell me that we can look at you destroying other people’s property without acting; you should not allow us to use the firearm to protect lives of other people. Let us use it to protect you,” Owino appealed.

He also urged the public not to seek sympathy by engaging in conflict with the police.

Owino urged youth to come up with economic empowerment ideas to develop themselves and their respective areas instead of engaging in crime.

“We are all aware that the elections are over and Kenyans are waiting to usher the new government on Tuesday and therefore we as a department appeal to all Kenyans to engage in development activities for our country,” Owino affirmed.

The police spokesman urged the public to be friends with the police because, “our sole role is to ensure there is safety and we enjoy the short life God has given us. The outgoing president has always urged us to enjoy.”

Mary Ombara the Director of Public Communications and Secretary to the National Steering Committee on Media monitoring speaking during the briefing commended the media for the great role it is continuing to play in urging people to remain united and promoting peace during the election petition filed by Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

“It is commendable that the mainstream media gave precedence and energy to the coverage of the five-day long hearing of the presidential petition. To a very large extent, the live streaming ensured neutrality and impartiality of coverage of a national issue of that magnitude,” Ombara opined.
