NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 29 – The postmortem on the late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo which was to take place on Monday afternoon has been postponed to Tuesday afternoon to allow for a United Kingdom-based pathologist to jet into the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Kilonzo family at a press briefing on Monday, Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama said the kin wanted an opinion independent to that of the government pathologist given the former Cabinet Minister’s unexpected demise.

“We all know Mutula has never been a person who has been heard complaining of health problems. Secondly, he drove himself to his farm and from the information that was given by his workers when he arrived there he was in good health. Those are the issues everybody would raise and ask,” said Muthama.

Muthama was however quick to add that the family was not necessarily insinuating that Kilonzo was murdered with the invitation of a foreign pathologist, but simply wanted no doubt over the cause of his death.

“Mutula being a person who was of the top level of leadership in this country, his issues cannot just be wished away. We need to give a clear position to Kenyans because they are waiting to hear and know what exactly caused his death,” Muthama explained.

Meanwhile the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has constituted a team of prosecutors from his office to assist the police in their investigations.

“I have constituted a team of prosecutors in my office headed by Grace Murungi to assist and guide the team of investigators you have appointed to investigate the above mentioned tragic incident,” Tobiko said in a letter to Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo.

The late Kilonzo’s wife Nduku Musau visited the Lee Funeral Home with her children on Monday and according to Musyoki Kivindyo who spoke on behalf of the family on Sunday, Kilonzo’s family and friends will meet at the African Inland Church (AIC) Milimani starting Tuesday to make burial arrangements.

At the press conference on Monday, Muthama said Kilonzo is likely to be buried any time from Thursday next week.

The UK-based pathologist whose identity Muthama says will be revealed on Tuesday will land at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 6am Tuesday and Kilonzo’s family hopes he will solve the mystery surrounding the late Makueni Senator’s death.

Historically a lot of controversy has surrounded many a political leaders’ death in Kenya with the late George Saitoti’s being the most recent until now.

During the tribunal hearings held to determine the reason behind the helicopter crash that led to Saitoti’s death, the government pathologists came under a lot of criticism for the way they carried out their investigations; a repeat of which the Kilonzo family could be looking to avoid.
