NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 30 – Mystery surrounding the death of Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo will linger for at least another two months after pathologists asked for more time following a postmortem on Tuesday.
According to pathologists who carried out postmortem on his body at the Lee Funeral Home, it will take them between eight to 10 weeks to make a conclusive finding.
Government chief pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor told journalists that the samples had been taken from the body and doctors will give a report earliest in July.
Oduor said: “We have to be patient to wait for the results; we have taken some samples which might take about eight to ten weeks. I beg your patience so that we conclude this exercise.”
The entire team of pathologist involved in the close to eight hour postmortem on the late Senator including Ian Calder who jetted into the country on Tuesday morning reported to have been in agreement over the preliminary findings.
They however could not reveal the nature of findings they got following the tests and analysis all Tuesday afternoon.
Calder said: “At this stage we have all agreed with our findings, there is no disagreement at all. It will of course take some time to actually develop the science behind the death and to review it. At this stage we will wait for the outcome of medical science to determine the cause of death.”
Family forensic pathologist Andrew Kanyi Gachie termed the postmortem as ‘very successful’ that was done very thoroughly but that there was need for further tests.
Others among the nine doctors who participated in the postmortem were Dr Luke Musau (for family), Dr Dorothy Njeru, (for government) Dr Emily Rugena (for family) and Dr Fredrick Okinyi a government pathologist from the Machakos Level Five hospital.
Homicide detectives at the CID headquarters were also reported to be piecing together information collected from the late Kilonzo’s workers and other people who had contact with him prior to his death.
CID director Ndegwa Muhoro says they are zeroing in on the Senator’s last moments before he arrived at his Maanzoni home and people he associated with as they await a medical report from the pathologists.
So far, all the workers at Kilonzo’s Maanzoni farm have been questioned as well as his driver and bodyguard who were with him on Friday before he retreated to his home.
Kilonzo’s family had on Monday postponed the postmortem to Tuesday afternoon to allow for the UK-based pathologist to jet into the country
Calder arrived in Kenya at 6.20am on Tuesday morning and had to wait for clearance from the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board before he could proceed with his assignment.
He was issued with a temporary that will mean that he is allowed to conduct postmortem at the lee Funeral Home for the next 10 months.
Despite the lengthened period for the delivery of post mortem results, Kilonzo’s family decided that he will be buried next Thursday according to Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama.
The Law Society of Kenya where the late Mutula served as chairman between 1982 and 1984 will play a major role at the burial, including providing lawyers as pall bearers.
A requiem mass for the late Senator who was found dead at his Maanzoni home on last Saturday will be held on Wednesday next week at the Nairobi Baptist Church.
