NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 28 – Condolences from various leaders continued to pour in to the family of the late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo with former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka describing him as an astute politician who was afraid of nothing.

Speaking at his Maanzoni home in Machakos County on Saturday, Kalonzo described his death as ‘shocking’ as the late Senator was vibrant before his demise.

He urged for calm as the cause of his death was being investigated after he was found at about 11.00 am with foam covering his mouth and nose.

“We got news of the death of our brother Senator Mutula Kilonzo and we could not understand what was going on. Even now, nobody here seems to know what has happened,” he said.

All we know is that our brother has left us and we are deeply shocked. The doctors are coming and a lot of them are here and we have all decided to let them get to the bottom of this matter,” he stated.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga pointed out that Kilonzo will be missed for his ability to think outside the box.

“It is a terrible tragedy that so soon after the Senate was opened that we should lose our brother. We were together with him 48 hours ago,” he stated.

“At a time Kenya is going through a rare moment in its history that is replete with immense legal and political challenges, we needed Hon Kilonzo’s brilliance, open-mindedness and ability to reach out to others of divergent opinion,” he said.

Secretary to the Cabinet Francis Kimemia emphasised that Kilonzo was one of the best ministers Kenya has ever had.

He stated that the late Senator guided Kenyans astutely during the implementation of the Constitution.

“Where we fell short, he gave guidance. On behalf of the Civil Service, I join Kenyans in mourning the death of Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo,” he said.

The immediate former President Mwai Kibaki said that with the death of Kilonzo, the country had lost an outstanding leader, resilient politician and a shrewd lawyer.

The former Head of State pointed out that as a testimony of his commitment to the national good, the late Kilonzo, as the Minister for Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs, played a pivotal role in the realization of the new Constitution.

“Indeed I will forever cherish the time we worked together with Mutula when he was Minister for Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs in the realization of the new constitution” he said.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero said he was profoundly saddened by Kilonzo’s death.

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Senator Mutula Kilonzo. We have lost a brilliant leader. My sincere condolences to his family,” he said.
