Kisumu Town West MP Olago Aluoch let the cat out of the bag on Thursday saying they were exploring two options; including impressing upon an MP from a CORD stronghold to resign triggering a by-election, which will give Musyoka a way back into the Legislature.
The second option is to have Musyoka nominated directly.
This, however, would be a tricky process as his Wiper party would have to ask the 11 people who are on a nominees list that was lodged with the electoral commission before the polls to stand down in the former VP’s favour.
Under the law, political parties submitted lists of possible nominees before the election.
The electoral commission then picks successive names on those lists to fill the quota allocated to a party on the strength of its parliamentary numbers. Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement got only one slot, meaning there are 11 other possible nominees on the waiting list.
“It is agreed that he comes back to Parliament. We are looking at several options… either someone who was elected resigns or someone who was nominated resigns and then he is replaced,” Aluoch said.
He however said former Prime Minister Raila Odinga rejected the idea of him making it back to Parliament “through the back-door.”
“To the best of my knowledge the PM will stay out of the National Assembly to build a strong CORD,” he continued.” I believe he has got the expertise, the experience and he still has the strength to guide and we want him to do so.”
Odinga who was the CORD presidential flag bearer and Musyoka his running mate, lost in last month’s General Election.
The Odinga-led coalition is positioning itself to execute its role as the main opposition party in Parliament that would keep President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government in check and make it accountable.
If Musyoka makes it back to Parliament, he could possibly take up the role of Minority Leader, while former Government Chief Whip Jakoyo Midiwo will deputise him.
As things stand, Midiwo’s name had been floated for Minority Leader.
