Led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto, the coalition endorsed Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki as the Senate Majority Leader, Kericho Senator Charles Keter as deputy leader and nominated Senator Beatrice Elachi as the Government Chief Whip.
The lawmakers, who were hosted to a luncheon at State House on Monday, had last Friday endorsed Garissa Township MP Aden Duale as Majority Leader in the National Assembly to be deputised by Taveta MP Naomi Shaban.
Kajiado South MP Katoo ole Metito was endorsed as the Government Chief Whip in the National Assembly while Mumias MP Benjamin Washiali will deputise him.
The Head of State urged the Members of Parliament to work together in ensuring that the pledges made to Kenyans were honoured by particularly supporting each other in passing crucial Bills.
“I am keenly looking forward to working with you to make the Jubilee government a true success story that will transform Kenya,” he said.
Kenyatta observed that Senators would play a vital role in the implementation of devolution as they were responsible for overseeing and providing leadership to the process.
He said that they would play an important role of setting a precedent on how the National and County governments worked in delivering services to Kenyans.
Kenyatta also reaffirmed his commitment to an open-door approach in the running of public affairs saying he was ready to consult with MPs on a regular basis to iron out any arising issues.
Ruto on his part underscored the need for Jubilee lawmakers to form a seamless focused team that would work together to steer the government’s agenda in Parliament.
The Deputy President reassured the MPs that he and the president would support them in implementing development projects in their constituencies, saying their success will translate to good services to Kenyans and victory to the Jubilee coalition.
The main opposition coalition – CORD – has in the meantime been meeting in Naivasha to deliberate on the minority leaders in both Houses.
Francis Nyenze will serve as the acting Minority Leader of the National Assembly as CORD works out how to get Kalonzo Musyoka into the House.
Nyenze is to be deputised by Jakoyo Midiwo while the Minority Whip in the National Assembly will be Gideon Mung’aro assisted by Chris Wamalwa.
The CORD alliance has also settled on Hassan Abdulrahman Ali as Deputy Minority Leader in the Senate to work under Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula.
Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama is Minority Whip while nominated Senator Janet Ongera will serve as deputy.
