NAIROBI Kenya, April 1- Police in Kisumu on Monday said they were holding 23 suspects arrested in connection with looting that occurred during the protest against the Supreme Court decision on the presidential results.

The demonstrations started shortly after Chief Justice Willy Mutunga read the Supreme Court decision which upheld Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory as announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission.

Nyanza police boss Joseph Oletito addressing press at his Kisumu office said the suspects will be arraigned in court Tuesday to be charged with robbery with violence.

“Following these kind of behaviour, police have so far arrested 23 criminal gangs, recovered some of the items that were stolen or looted from the premises of the suspects and with the sufficient evidence that we have, all these characters are supposed to appear before the court of law,” Oletito affirmed.

The police boss further noted that the number of people displaced as a result of the protest stands at 59.

“We have found that now in Kisumu we have Internally Displaced Persons: they are 22 children, 16 women and 21 male adults now housed at Kondele Police Station,” he revealed.

Oletito further confirmed that investigations into the killing of two demonstrators by the police were ongoing.

“There are two people who died and 11 wounded. An investigation is underway to establish circumstances that led to this,” Ole Tito said. “We cannot tell as of now what killed them but all will come out after the investigation.”

The deaths of the two people occurred during confrontations with police officers at Kondele area, where youths attempted to block roads to protest the Supreme Court verdict .

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo had on Sunday speaking to Capital FM News urged members of the public to be wary of criminal gangs which take advantage of the situation to loot property after causing disorder.

“We had a few problems here and there but the situation has been contained. There are people who took advantage to loot in the name of demonstrators but most of them were arrested,” Kimaiyo said.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga in his statement while accepting the court verdict said: “The future of Kenya is bright. Let us not allow the elections to divide us. Let us reunite as a nation.”
