NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 30 -The European Union Commission has congratulated president-elect Uhuru Kenyatta following the Supreme Court ruling that upheld his election.
Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said in a statement on Saturday that the court’s judgement was the result of the country’s political reforms.
He said that the commission was also appreciative of the pronouncement by Kenyatta that he will meet all his international obligations.
“Kenyans can be proud that the political reform process of their country is bearing fruit. With continued efforts to implement the new constitution Kenyans can build the globally competitive and prosperous nation they aspire to be.
“In that context it is particularly important that the domestic and international rule of law prevails. The European Union welcomes the commitment of the new government and its members to abide by their international obligations.
“The European Union attaches the greatest importance to its partnership with the government and people of Kenya, and wishes that partnership to continue and flourish to the benefit of both our peoples,” the statement said.
Elsewhere, French President Francois Hollande also congratulated Kenyatta saying, France considers Kenya an important partner in Eastern Africa for its role in regional stability.
President Hollande expressed France’s desire to continue its cooperation with Kenya in many social, political and economic spheres.
“France considers Kenya as an important partner in Eastern Africa, one essential to regional stability and therefore wishes to continue its cooperation and constructive reinforced political dialogue with your country,” said the French President.
President Hollande saluted Kenyatta’s commitment to peace in the just ended General Election in accordance with the new institutions stemming from the 2010 constitution of Kenya.
He appreciated President-elect Kenyatta’s promise to ensure Kenya remains committed to international obligations and a continued cooperation with all partner nations and international institutions.
Also congratulating Kenyatta was the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) which said it will work with him immediately he is sworn in.
In a statement IGAD’s Executive Secretary, Ambassador Mahboub Maalim called on Kenyans to maintain peace and tranquility and concentrate on nation building.
They welcomed the Supreme Court ruling saying that it the dispute resolution process showed democratic maturity and that the result was testament of judicial independence.
“IGAD takes the decision of the six judges as great achievement to be celebrated throughout the region showing the maturity of the democratic process in Kenya.
“On my his behalf and that of the IGAD Member States, the Executive Secretary conveys a message of congratulations to the President-elect, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, Hon. William Ruto. We welcome President-elect Kenyatta as a key member of the IGAD Summit of Heads of State and Government soon after being sworn in on 9th April 2013, and wishes him all the best in his endeavour,” read the statement.
