NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 1 – A meeting planned by President Mwai Kibaki with the eight presidential contenders will likely take place on Sunday.

State House sources told Capital FM News that even though there was a proposal for the meeting to take place, no firm decision had been reached.

“If it happens maybe Sunday,” the source indicated.

The meeting is expected to take place ahead of Monday’s historic elections but has not been confirmed due to busy schedules by the eight presidential candidates.

Invitations had already been sent out to the eight by the Head of Civil Service Francis Kimemia inviting them for “a cup of tea” with President Kibaki.

Kibaki who has been president for two terms will hand over leadership under the new constitution which has clear guidelines on transition.

Apart from discussing the transition, the meeting with the presidential candidates and the outgoing Head of State will also emphasise the importance of observing peace.

One of the key requests put to the presidential candidates is acceptance of the election outcome, and pursuit of legal means in case of dissatisfaction.

The 2007 election was marred with violence after a dispute of the presidential poll that led to a standoff between the main contenders President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Currently, the Judiciary, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the police and other relevant stakeholders have put mechanisms in place to handle any violence and election disputes that may arise in Monday’s General Election.
