Kidero who is the immediate former CEO of Mumias Sugar garnered 692,483 votes against Waititu’s 617,839 votes.
In his speech after being declared winner, Kidero vowed to concentrate on a journey of transforming the city which will include everyone despite their race, religion nor political affiliation.
He said: “The promises we made, the desires expressed by the people of Nairobi are not in vain; we will work to ensure that the history written by my election puts Nairobi in its rightful place.”
“Nairobi occupies a unique place: it is a commercial hub, it is a communication hub and is the gateway to the market of one billion people and its potential has to be exploited. I do undertake to work with everybody including hawkers who have been mistreated; matatu people who have sustained our transport industry; our commercial enterprises that have nor realised their full potential,” he said amid cheers from supporters.
Waititu who emerged second was not present at Nyayo National Stadium while the results were announced.
Businessman Jimnah Mbaru took third place with 52,084 votes while former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia came fourth with 5,182 votes.
Mbaru who sought the governors’ seat on the Alliance Party of Kenya later conceded defeat thanking his campaign team and all those who had turned out to vote for him.
“I would like to thank all the Nairobi residents who came out to vote for me and my entire team who worked tirelessly on my campaign over the past few months,” he said in a statement that also wished Kidero well in his new position.
In the race for county women representative, former nominated MP Rachael Shebesh was elected beating Silvia Mingala of ODM by 626,287 votes to 323,332.
Esther Passaris of the Kenya National Congress party came in third place garnering 289,292 votes.
