NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 7 – Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Ongeri, who was The National Alliance’s (TNA) pointman in Kisii lost to ODM’s Chris Obure in his quest to clinch the senatorial seat.

Obure garnered 120,351 votes against Ongeri’s 106,325 votes.

The Kisii vote was highly coveted by all the presidential candidates who spent considerable time in the area during the campaign period.

Being the TNA’s figure head in the region, the minister was expected to bag massive votes for TNA candidate Uhuru Kenyatta.

His loss wouldn’t have been in the vicinity if his experience in government was to count.

The minister had earlier said the community had the numerical and economic strength to tilt the vote in favour of Kenyatta.

“We want to use our numerical strength for the wider benefit of this community, and the only way to show our strength is to vote as a bloc for one presidential aspirant,” said Prof Ongeri during his endorsement to TNA candidate.

Assistant minister Manson Nyamweya had at the time dismissed the Ongeri declaration, saying “the mood is clear” that the Abagusii are fully behind ODM which has become evident as the votes continue to trickle in. ODM has bagged massive votes from the region.

The final results released has shown all candidates had a portion to bag from Kisii votes with Prime Minister Raila Odinga taking the majority garnering 235,934 while Kenyatta managing to get 95,006; Mudavadi 2,607; Kenneth 2,606; Karua 2,464; Kiyiapi 2,080; Dida 925 and Muite 227.

The governor’s seat also went to ODM’s James Ongwae who garnered 230,181 votes against TNA’s Lumumba Nyaberi who got 63,752.
