NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 8 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has now confirmed that it will declare the outcome of the March 4 election on Friday.

IEBC Chief Executive Officer James Oswago said all the Returning Officers had made their way to the Bomas of Kenya national tallying centre and that the only results yet to be announced were from 30 constituencies.

Oswago explained that those that pending were from Nyanza, Nairobi, Eastern, Western and the Rift Valley and that the commission was working round the clock to ensure the outcome was declared on Friday.

“We will finish this work today. All the results are here and we have three constituencies from Nyanza, whose outcome is still pending, one from Nairobi, two in Eastern, 10 in Western, 12 in Rift Valley and two others,” he said.

He lauded Kenyans for their patience saying the IEBC wanted to ensure all its results were credible even though they were being announced at a snail’s pace.

The commission’s chairman Issack Hassan reiterated Oswago’s stand saying the IEBC would ensure it kept its word to announce the results on Friday.

He added that the commission had divided the entire tallying process into nine teams, each focusing on verifying results from constituencies in specific counties.

Oswago said that the commission had encountered problems with Mathare and Endebess constituencies but it had resolved them.

The commission’s lawyer had earlier confirmed reports that the IEBC wrongly issued a winner’s certificate to Stephen Kariuki, for the Mathare constituency.

“We are at different stages of tallying and we will announce the results once we are done,” he said.

He at the same time dispelled rumours that he had been missing from the action and had either been arrested or kidnapped.

Hassan also supported Oswago saying he had been busy supervising the IEBC teams to ensure that they gave fair results and had not gone away without leave of absence.

Several Kenyans had posted comments on various social networking sites asking where the Oswago was. Some claimed he had been taken to the Department of Defence and others claimed he had fallen out with other IEBC commissioners.

“A minor reason why I’m here is to show that I’m neither in prison nor dead but I am stressed and very tired,” he quipped.

The results being transmitted on the screen at the Bomas of Kenya were not adding up prompting former Muhoroni MP Ayiecho Olweny to demand for answers.
Olweny argued that the numbers on the screen had exceeded votes cast by 23,000.

Oswago admitted that there was an anomaly and promised that it would be corrected.

“There’s been disconnect between what is projected on screen and what is announced but we are working on that,” he said.
