NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 9 – It was joy and ululation at the Jubilee Media Centre in Karen as Uhuru Kenyatta’s supporters came together to celebrate his win in the tightly contested General Election.

Thousands of supporters in red, blue and yellow – United Republic Party, NARC and The National Alliance party colour attires danced and sang to mark the announcement of Kenya’s fourth president.

Some broke down in tears as others prayed thanking the almighty for the win that has taken six days to be announced.

Despite the anxiety and long hours of wait since Friday night, the supporters say they had faith that Kenyatta would emerge the winner.

The supporters are calling for peace and unity among all Kenyans.

The hall inside the media centre was filled to capacity with party winners in the just-concluded election.

Even those who also lost in the election had been camping at the Jubilee centre since Friday waiting for the IEBC’s historical announcement.

Ali Chirau Mwakwere who lost in the election told Capital FM News that it was up to all Kenyans to work together and support the new president.

“We supported him and he has won. There are those who were not supporting him… he is now the president of Kenya leading all of us, those who supported him and those who did not support him,” he advised.

Jebii Kilimo another MP who lost also called for peace and tolerance.

She invited those who were supporting other presidential candidates to accept Kenyatta’s win since he is not just the president of his supporters but the president of all Kenyans.

She said, just like she is ready to work with those who defeated her in the race, so should Kenyans also accept the one who was declared winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

“It is a great day, we are happy we have won, but it is also the win of all Kenyans,” she asserted.

“Let us all celebrate, the election was done peacefully, there was no violence, so it was all Kenyans who won, we will continue to celebrate,” a Jubilee supporter said.

The Jubilee centre was a beehive of activities as both international and local media crews had been camping for one and half days waiting for the announcement.

Security was tight for people entering the media centre in preparation for Kenyatta’s speech.
