NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 16 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday night expressed displeasure after a group of students at Kenyatta University demonstrated over alleged marking of ballot papers.

In a statement IEBC said the ballot papers and boxes found at Kenyatta University were used during the pre-election simulation exercise and were even unmarked.

“The documents found are only unmarked ballot papers and ballot boxes used during simulation. These materials are well secured for retrieval to the warehouse in Kasarani office,” the IEBC communication office clarified.

The commission expressed displeasure that students broke out into chaos yet the papers were even unmarked.

The commission regretted that politicians played a role in inciting the students to demonstrate over something that was far from the truth and also a serious allegation against IEBC.

“IEBC is shocked by alarming news on text messages and social media of its officers being aggressively confronted by students at KU tallying centre office. This is as a result of incitement by some politicians,” IEBC said in the statement.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has told Capital News that they are investigating if the situation was politically motivated.

The commission further clarified that it was not possible to alter any results since they have already been declared in form 34 which is in the public domain.

KU students on Friday evening burnt down a vehicle belonging to IEBC before they stormed out of the university and blocked a section of Thika Superhighway.

The situation was complicated further after politicians allied to CORD arrived at the university demanding to know the genesis of the ballot papers.

IEBC has warned politicians and the rest of the country against careless utterances likely to interfere with the peace of the country.

“We ask politicians to exercise caution and patience before sending alarming massages which could endanger the lives of innocent officers,” IEBC asserted.
