The president particularly called for support to the newly established Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in its endeavour to ensure fairness in the remuneration of public servants.
Noting that this is the first time the government has put in place a proper commission to deal with the remuneration of public servants, President Kibaki said the SRC should fully implement its policy of equal pay for work of equal value.
The president was speaking on Monday at his Harambee House office during his first meeting with the SRC since its appointment in January last year.
The Head of State emphasised that all efforts must be made to guarantee sustainability of the public wage bill.
“We should make deliberate efforts to ensure that the remuneration of public officers is managed transparently,” President Kibaki said.
Speaking during the meeting, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, led by its chairperson Sarah Serem updated President Kibaki on its progress since its appointment.
Serem said her commission has made significant progress in addressing the issues of disparity, productivity and harmonisation of the public servants’ salary structure.
The SRC chairperson said a new salary structure for State officers will be launched tomorrow.
The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Njeru Githae, Public Service Minister Dalmas Otieno, Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Francis Kimemia, Treasury Permanent Secretary Joseph Kinyua and his Internal Security counterpart Mutea Iringo among others.
