Kenya’s new president to take oath at Kasarani

STATE-HOUSE-NAIROBINAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 8 – The swearing in of Kenya’s new president has been moved to the 60,000 seater Kasarani Sports Complex from the Nyayo Stadium.

The Head of the Public Service Francis Kimemia said it was better to host the historic event at the more spacious stadium.

“The Nyayo Stadium can only accommodate 35,000 people and we have decided to move the event to Kasarani,” Kimemia indicate on Friday.

The president-elect is due to be sworn into office on March 26 if victory is achieved in the first round, according to a schedule released by the government last week.

In case there is a petition but it is dismissed, the swearing in will take place on April 16.

If a run-off for the presidential ballot is held, swearing in of the new president is planned for April 30, and June 18 if there is a repeat of the election.

According to the Constitution, if a president-elect dies after being declared president but before assuming office, the deputy president-elect shall be sworn in as acting president on the date on which the president-elect would otherwise have been sworn in.

A fresh election to the office of the president shall be held within 60-days after the death of the president-elect.
