The chairman of The Presidential Debates Steering Committee Wachira Waruru announced that Paul Muite and Mohamed Abduba Dida had been invited to the presidential debate and assured Kenyans that the event would continue as planned.
NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 11 – All the presidential candidates will participate in Monday night’s live debate following an order issued by the High Court.
Justice Eric Ogola had issued an order blocking the debate unless all the eight candidates cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission were given a chance to participate.
Waruru confirmed that all the candidates had been invited to take part in the debate which will be beamed live on TV, radio and online at www.capitalfm.co.ke/elections
The debates’ Director of Operations Francis Munywoki earlier assured participants that the all the necessary arrangements had been finalised ahead of the event to take place at Brookhouse school.
“We have put together very strong security in this area. We have secured not just this area but up to about a kilometre. We have good support from the inspector general (of police); we will have bomb detectors, sniffer dogs,” he assured.
The historical debate will focus on governance, health, education and security while a second and final one scheduled for later in the month will delve into land use among other issues.
Munywoki assured that all the presidential candidates participating in the debate will be accorded an equal amount of time to argue their case in convincing Kenyans to elect them.
A cross section of Kenyans interviewed by Capital FM News said they were eagerly waiting the debate.
They welcomed the live presidential debate which gave them hope that Kenyan politics was being transformed to focus on issues facing the electorate and not sideshows.
Monday will be the first time in Kenya that rival presidential candidates take the same stage to sell their agenda to voters.
