SIAYA, Kenya, Jan 28 – Property worth thousands of shillings was on Monday destroyed following another fire at Maranda High School.

According to the Deputy Principal Bob Otieno, the fire which razed two dormitories, was noticed at around 6.30am when students had already left for morning assembly.

He said the dormitories had a capacity of 120 and 95 students.

Otieno disclosed that there was a power blackout and that by the time the fire broke out, they were using a generator.

He however pointed out that the exact cause of the blaze had not yet been established.

He said students’ property in the two dormitories was completely destroyed and an assessment of the damage would be made later.

In September last year, two dormitories were also destroyed at the school under mysterious circumstances. The fire then was said to have been caused by an electric fault.

The school was in the headlines last year after it garnered a performance index of 11.057 points, up from 10.558 in 2010 before topping KCSE nationally in 2011.
