NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 22 – Violent protests broke out early on Monday morning in Nairobi’s Kawangware area after a woman who was pushed out of moving matatu was ran over by another vehicle.

Angry residents set ablaze the bus that ran over the woman moments after it stopped, but its crew managed to escape.

Residents interviewed by Capital FM News said that the woman was pushed out of the moving matatu following a dispute over Sh10 she couldn’t pay.

“This bus that has been burnt ran over the woman after she was thrown off a matatu that sped off. The conductor of the matatu wanted Sh30 but the lady had Sh20 and he threw her out. The bus coming from behind could not avoid her as it was close to the matatu,” said a motorcyclist who witnessed the 7am incident.

The bus was burnt before angry residents dismantled it, cutting off parts ostensibly to sell to scrap metal dealers, undeterred by anti-riot police.

Other vehicles also had their windscreens smashed with stones forcing motorists to use different routes.

Police who were deployed to subdue the protesters could only watch from a distance after they were overwhelmed by the crowd.

The body of the unidentified woman was taken to the city mortuary shortly after the incident.

Head of Police operations in Nairobi Wilfred Mbithi later confirmed that order had been restored in the area investigations commenced on the matter.
