NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 13- Kenyans who registered as voters have been given an opportunity to verify their details after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) opened its voter register for inspection.

IEBC Corporate Communications Manager Tabitha Mutemi said they have made it easy for voters to verify their details—including by use of mobile phone numbers.

Voters are advised to send a short text message to 15872 with names and National Identity Card or Passport numbers used during registration.

“Voters can also visit their respective registration centers or log onto the electoral body’s website, vote.iebc.ke to verify their details before the exercise closes on January 26,” she said.

She said the commission decided to use the SMS method because it is preferred by over 60 percent of Kenyans compared to 15 percent who prefers visiting registration centers.

Mutemi said the exercise will is aimed at ensuring voters get their details right to enable the commission clean the register ahead of March 4 poll.

Names of people found to have used fake documents to register as voters will be deleted besides the commission taking legal action on them.

After the verification process, the list of the voters will be made accessible to the public including the political parties on the IEBC website.

14.3 million Kenyans were registered countrywide in the exercise that concluded on December 18 with 15,000 Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits used to capture voters’ details.

IEBC intends to set up 33,000 polling stations for the actual voting where each of the polling stations is expected to cater for a maximum 450 voters.
