NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 18 – The United Democratic Forum (UDF) party on Friday started issuing certificates to candidates who had won in the just ended nominations, ahead of the March 4 elections.

Elections Board chairman Abraham Limo said despite the challenges that characterised the nominations, the party would ensure that all those who were declared winners by 1pm on Friday received their nomination papers before the end of the day.

“We will only issue certificates at the headquarters upon us receiving confirmation of the results from our returning officers. Candidates have come here claiming that they have won, but we take that as allegations,” Limo told journalists at a news conference.

UDF presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi was among those who were presented with the certificates by the chairman at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi.

The party was yet to receive results from other centres which Limo said experienced delays in starting the exercise on Thursday and were pushed to Friday.

“No one will be given any nominations certificate if he or she has not won in the nominations. So far we haven’t had major complaints as we would have expected. We know there were some delays in some of the centres but we have done our best to make sure everything goes well,” Limo assured.

He however insists that the party will only address any complaint which will be presented formally to the board.

Meanwhile Limo said the election board is still discussing the way forward over who will represent the party for the gubernatorial post in Kakamega.

This follows the disqualification of Housing Minister Soita Shitanda on claims that he did not have a degree. Shitanda has however since secured nomination for the race from New Ford Kenya. The minister said he held two degrees, one of which was duly recognised in Kenya.

There is a likelihood that the party may decide to give a direct nomination considering the limited time left to send lists of nominees to the Independent Electoral Commission of Kenya.

“His exit is not going to affect us as a party. We will sort out our members to ensure that when we submit our documents to IEBC, our candidate does not again get technically knocked out and therefore give our opponents a free chance,” Limo said.
