Top 3 students score 430 marks in 2012 KCPE exams

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 28 – The results of the 2012 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations were released on Monday, placing three students at the top with 430 marks each.

Kinoti Joy Kathure from Meru County tied at the top position with Mwaura Boniface and Wachira Njomo, both from Kiambu with 430 marks out of a possible 500, in the results released on Monday by Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo.

In fourth position was Muteti Kelvin Mwangangi from Machakos with 429 marks. Kindiki Dan Muthomi was ranked fifth with the same marks while Shalom Nthenya Mulinge was number six with 428 marks.

“Number seven is Maina Douglas Gichuhi, 427 – Laikipia County. Number seven also is Gitamu Audrey Kemundo, female – 427, Nairobi county. Number 10 is Muriga Veronica Wairimu, female – 426, Nairobi county,” Kilonzo said.

Kanji Bhanderi Nikun, Maina Douglas Gichohi and Gitamo Audrey Kemunto were ranked seventh, eighth and ninth respectively after they tied with 427 marks.

Muriga Veronica Wairimu and Shihemi Kelvin Witila both from Nairobi County were ranked number 10 and 11 after they scored 426 marks.

The minister also announced that last year’s performance was far much better than 2011 and 2010.

“In 2012, a total of 416,900 candidates scored above 250 marks representing 51.35 percent of the candidates who sat for the examinations compared to 48.26 in the year 2011 and 49.38 in the year 2010,” he said.

Kilonzo said there were seven male candidates and four female who ranked in the top 10 nationally.

In the top schools nationally, Newlight Komarock in Nairobi was ranked position one, followed by Makini Ngong Road Academy while Gilgil Hills Academy from Nakuru County was third.

“In fourth position of top school nationally was Marell Academy (Bungoma), Fred’s Academy (Meru) fifth, Chelsa Academy (Bomet) sixth, Pleasant View School (Kiambu) seventh, John Paul II (Laikipia) eighth, Josnem Academy (Nyandarua) ninth while Kathigiri B from Meru was ranked number 10,” he outlined.

Counties were also ranked according to their performance with Kirinyaga emerging number one with a mean score of 273, Elgeyo Marakwet second with 272, Nandi third (271) while Uasin Gishu and Baringo tied in fourth position with a mean score of 270 each.

In fifth position was Makueni County with a mean score of 268, Busia sixth with 267, Kisumu was number seven with 264 followed by Tharaka Nithi and West Pokot counties with 263 each.

The minister stated that he was impressed by the remarkable improvement in gender parity displayed in the 2012 KCPE exams.

“KCPE examination gender parity has nearly been achieved nationally as it stood at 51.2 percent boys and 48.9 percent girls in 2012 which is the closest we have been towards achieving gender parity in KCPE examinations in 10 years,” he pointed out.
