Rowdy youths disrupt Kamanda’s meeting

MAINA-KAMANDANAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 7 – A meeting called by former Starehe Member of Parliament Maina Kamanda in Nairobi’s Muthurwa market was violently disrupted by youths on Monday.

The youths shouted down Kamanda and other speakers while waving placards of his opponent, as he addressed supporters after opening a TNA office.

Police said no injuries were reported in the fracas that forced Kamanda to abandon the meeting.

Kamanda condemned the incident and urged his competitors to hold peaceful campaigns ahead of nominations scheduled for next week.

The former sports minister who is aspiring to be nominated to re-claim the Starehe parliamentary seat also called on the TNA leadership to put in place mechanisms that guarantee free and fair nominations.

After he was shouted down, Kamanda had to resort to a tour of Muthurwa and the neighbouring Wakulima market. He later condemned the incident and called on fellow contestants to hold peaceful campaigns.

He said: “It is unfortunate that our people are still in the old age where acts like I have witnessed were normal. However, we need to talk to our supporters to make them understand the law. These kinds of actions may get someone barred from contesting if reported to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).”

He said that aspirants need to educate their supporters on the need to maintain peace during campaigns and respect the rights of other candidates to be heard by the electorate.

“All candidates regardless of their parties must know that we need peace when conducting our meetings; it is not the people who heckle who will help you win the election it’s how you interact with the voters and how well you articulate your policies,” he emphasised.

Most political parties are set to conduct their party or coalition primaries on January 17, a day before the deadline set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for parties to have completed their nominations.
