NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 7 – Political parties will have until January 24 to address any complaints that arise from nominations slated for next week.

According to a notice published on the IEBC website and directed to political parties intending to participate in the elections to nominate their candidates before January 18, “all nomination disputes will be resolved seven days after they are lodged.”

There has been concern among aspirants in the major political groupings – Jubilee and the Coalition for the Restoration and Democracy (CORD) – that they may be locked out of the polls after constitute parties moved their nomination dates to January 17.

Ford Kenya which is among the key partners in the CORD alliance is not keen on joint nominations.

Ford Kenya has assured aspirants that they will be guaranteed free and fair nominations if the party holds individual primaries.

“We shall have seven days in which we will be receiving, hearing and determining complaints from aspirants and if need be we will order for a repeat nominations. So we would like to assure them that no one will be locked out because even those who set January 18 as the deadline for conducting nominations, knew that there must be time to determine complaints that may arise,” Joel Ruhu, who is the party’s first national vice-chairman told a media briefing after chairing a National Executive Council meeting at the party headquarters.

According to the IEBC notice which was published on December 28 last year, Members of Parliament, Senators and Women Representatives, political parties and independent candidates will be nominated on January 31 and February 1.

Those running for parliamentary seats will be required to submit their nomination papers to IEBC returning officers in their constituencies.

Party lists for nominated MPs will be submitted to the IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi on January 31 whereas the Senate and Women Representative candidates will deliver their nomination papers to the County Returning Officers in their respective counties on the same day.

Governors will be required to include their nominee for Deputy Governor who is qualified for nomination for election as deputy governor.

The candidates for the County Assembly nominations will be on January 29, 30, 31 and candidates will submit their nomination papers to the returning officers at the Constituency Election Offices.
