NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 18 – Businessman Jimnah Mbaru has pledged to deal with youth unemployment if elected governor of Nairobi.
Mbaru who cast his ballot during The National Alliance poll at Moi Avenue Primary, stated that during his tenure he will create opportunities which will enable the youth make use of their entrepreneurial skills.
“My determination is to transform this city into the business capital of Africa. We want Nairobi to be Africa’s business capital and we shall go out of our way to ensure there are no bottlenecks in this initiative,” he said.
He further pointed out that one of his goals is to turn Nairobi into a 24-hour economy.
The Dyer and Blair Investment Bank chairman said that he is best suited for the job having worked and excelled in various organisations, adding that a governor’s job cannot just be given to anyone.
“I shall have a major agenda of doubling the economy of Nairobi within five years. We have three pillars to be able to transform our county into a 24-hour economy. We want some of our people to be able to work during the day and others at night,” he said.
He further indicated that he will construct at least 500,000 housing units per year if elected into office to bridge the gap of houses for the rapidly growing population.
“We shall also address the problem of insecurity in this county. We have about 1,200 policemen and police women whereas we should be having about 4,000 to 5,000 so there is a massive shortage of policemen.”
Mbaru’s campaign to be Nairobi’s first governor received a welcome shot in the arm after three rivals threw their weight behind him.
The three, Timothy Muriuki, Chege Waweru and Lee Muchiri said that they had decided, after wide consultations, to withdraw their bids to back Mbaru so that the TNA ticket can have a better chance of beating the CORD aspirant at the March 4 polls.
Muriuki and Chege said that although they had stepped down to join Mbaru’s campaign, Muchiri will challenge popular Makadara MP Mike Mbuvi alias Sonko for the TNA ticket to contest the Nairobi senate seat.
Should Mbaru succeed in his bid for the Jubilee ticket, he will face off with ODM’s Evans Kidero.
The arithmetic in the race for the Nairobi governor’s position changed radically on Wednesday with disqualification of Bishop Margaret Wanjiru and the exit of Philip Kisia from the Orange Democratic Movement.
Bishop Wanjiru was knocked out of the race after queries were raised over her academic qualifications as former Nairobi Town Clerk Kisia announced he had ditched ODM to contest the seat on a Federal Party of Kenya ticket.
Wanjiru will now go for the Women Representative’s seat on an ODM ticket.
