NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 17 – Former Mumias Sugar Company CEO Evans Kidero is exuding confidence that he will clinch the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the March 4 elections.

Speaking after casting his vote in the ongoing ODM party primaries, Kidero said he has what it takes to lead Nairobi.

“I believe that the turnout and the votes that I will receive will be a measure of Nairobians’ confidence in giving me a mantle to represent our party at the national elections in March. I am very confident,” he stated.

He urged voters in polling centres where the exercise was delayed to exercise patience.

“The reports I am getting is that voting has not began in 75 percent of the polling stations but we believe that it will be well on the way very shortly,” he pointed out.

He said the delay would be resolved to allow voting to take place before the end of the day.

“We have jus voted at the Pumwani Social Hall. I can see there are a lot of people, and the movement is smooth, everything is peaceful and people are well controlled. This is the trend we should see in the whole of Nairobi,” he stated.

At the Moi Avenue Primary School where TNA nominations were to take place, delivery of polling materials delayed the nomination process.

A number of those interviewed by Capital FM News said they had arrived at the centre as early as 8am.

They complained that no explanation had been given for the delay.

“We are all here waiting patiently for our party to begin the process,” stated one voter.

According to the returning officer at the school Brian Mwangi, there were only ballot papers for county representatives.

The arithmetic in the race for the Nairobi governor’s position changed radically overnight on Wednesday with disqualification of Bishop Margaret Wanjiru and the exit of Philip Kisia from the Orange Democratic Movement.

Bishop Wanjiru was knocked out of the race after queries were raised over her academic qualifications as former Nairobi Town Clerk Kisia announced he had ditched ODM to contest the seat on a Federal Party of Kenya ticket. Wanjiru will now go for the Women Representative’s seat on ODM ticket.

The developments mean the ODM ticket is surely set to go Kidero.

At the TNA camp, investment banker and entrepreneur Jimnah Mbaru and outgoing Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu are pitted against each other in the battle for the governor’s ticket.
