NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 7 – Rift Valley Provincial Police chief John M’mbijiwe was among five senior police officers summoned to Nairobi on Monday over the saga of a man who allegedly posed as a deputy PPO for five years.

Sources told Capital FM News that others called for questioning include the head of police in Central Province Francis Munyambu, Anti Stock Theft Unit chief Remi Ngugi and the officer in charge of Njoro police station.

“They are being investigated over the issue… that is why they were called to Vigilance House,” a senior police officer privy to the probe told Capital FM News.

The officers were supposed to record independent statements on what they know about Joshua Karianjahi Waiganjo – a man who allegedly posed as a senior police officer for five years.

The officers spent the better part of the day at Police headquarters where they were questioned briefly.

“They are expected back here (Vigilance House) tomorrow (Tuesday) for further questioning,” the officer said.

A highly placed source disclosed a move to have the officers sent on compulsory leave until the investigation is completed.

“If they are found culpable, they will definitely find themselves in court but if investigations show they have nothing to do with it they will be back to work,” the officer added, on assurances his identify would not be disclosed.

Even as the officers recorded statements, the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo was holding a crisis meeting at Bruce House, where he still operates from. The office houses the Small Arms Secretariat.

Officials from the National Police Service Commission also attended the closed-door meeting to unveil a probe team as directed by President Mwai Kibaki at the weekend.

Other sources told Capital FM News that the probe team which was expected to be made public on Monday evening will comprise officers the CID, National Police Service Commission and the Attorney General’s office.

The Director of Public Prosecutions will also have representatives in the probe team likely to be led by deputy CID director Gideon Kimilu.

Other sources at Harambee House confided in us that the National Police Service Commission appeared uncomfortable with the government directive issued through Civil Service Chief Francis Kimemia.

“There is a feeling he overstepped his mandate because neither Kimaiyo nor Kavuludi should receive instructions from any quarters,” the source said.

Kavuludi was not immediately available for comment.

The alleged police imposter is already facing robbery and impersonation charges in a Naivasha court, but police have indicated they may prefer more charges against him.

Kimemia told Capital FM News at the weekend that the government will thoroughly investigate the matter and take stern legal action against any culprits.

The sources indicated that Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere would also be required to record a statement over the matter.
