NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 9 – The alleged police imposter Joshua Waiganjo has been released on a Sh4 million bond by a Naivasha court.

Waiganjo was freed on bail despite objections from the prosecution that he might interfere with witnesses.

His lawyers John Khaminwa, Cliff Ombetta and Katwa Kigen had asked the court to strike out the case saying the charges were defective.

Waiganjo is facing 12 counts ranging from robbery with violence to impersonation.

The prosecution has indicated to the court it intends to file additional charges for murders he allegedly committed in Nairobi, Nyeri and Kitale.

Senior Resident Magistrate Esther Boke will make a ruling whether to accept the current charges on January 23.

Waiganjo’s incident has already seen three senior police officers suspended after President Mwai Kibaki ordered an inquiry into his alleged activities. He expects a report within 10 days from January 7.

The suspensions forced a reshuffle of senior police officers across the country. The commission said the changes were necessitated by the interdictions announced earlier on Tuesday over the controversy surrounding Waiganjo.

“We have interdicted the (three) officers with immediate effect to allow for thorough and conclusive investigations into the matter,” the commission’s chairman Johnston Kavuludi said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Waiganjo who is accused of masquerading as a Senior Superintendent of Police since October 2002 “was allegedly deployed in the Nakuru Anti Stock Theft Unit Headquarters as the Deputy Commandant,” Kavuludi explained.
