NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 27 – Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o on Thursday said the party would not be giving any direct nominations to any aspirant.

Nyong’o stated that the ODM National Elections Board would conduct what he termed as “free and fair” nominations in which all contestants would be subjected.

He assured that there were absolutely “no sacred cows in the party.”

“As Secretary General of the party I have two people running against me for the Kisumu County senate seat. I am doing all I can to win the hearts and minds of voters in a competitive and open nomination process,” Nyong’o told a news conference in Nairobi.

On Wednesday, Gem Member of Parliament Jakoyo Midiwo had announced that anyone intending to contest against Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s brother Oburu for the Siaya governor’s seat should be prepared to quit ODM, because the assistant minister had already been handed a direct ticket.

But at the news conference held at the ODM headquarters, Nyong’o clarified that Midiwo had been misquoted thus “I have checked this issue with Midiwo and he assures me that he never said anything like that.”

He said that the story was a fabrication by “persons with ill intentions calculated to undermine the integrity of the electoral process in the party.”

Oburu also came to the defense of Midiwo saying he was misquoted. He said that he was ready for nominations in order to get the ticket in a credible manner

The Assistant minister who spoke in Kisumu insisted he would turn down any offer for a direct nomination.

“I was present at the occasion when Midiwo spoke and I did not hear him say what has been reported. The party has never declared that I will be the sole candidate for the Siaya seat. If they have decided so they have not communicated to me,” he said.
