Jubilee cancels Nyeri rally as differences mount

The alliance is due to hold its controversial presidential primary on Sunday but it remains in doubt/CFM-File

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 20 – differences in the Jubilee Alliance have intensified after a rally that was set for Friday in Nyeri was cancelled at the last minute.

Teams from the United Democratic Forum (UDF) and The National Alliance (TNA) had both sent advisories to the media on the rally, before the TNA team announced the cancellation.

The rally in Nyeri was due to be followed by another on Saturday at the Tononoka grounds in Mombasa but it’s not clear if it will proceed.

The rallies were supposed to precede Sunday’s controversial presidential primary.

Sources within the alliance told Capital FM News that the poll, which has been put off twice will take place at the Kasarani Sports Centre, Nairobi.

The primary which will involve national delegates electing who will be the coalition’s presidential candidate will come after a rally on Saturday.

The top alliance’s leaders, including Uhuru Kenyatta, William Ruto and Charity Ngilu had been expected at the rallies.

Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi had confirmed that he would attend the Jubilee rallies but remained non-committal if he would participate in the coalition’s presidential poll.

United Democratic Forum (UDF) Chairman Hassan Osman said the party was still demanding the endorsement of Mudavadi as the coalition’s presidential flag bearer as agreed in a secret deal he signed with TNA’s Kenyatta.

Kenyatta and Mudavadi signed an agreement in which Kenyatta agreed to step down for Mudavadi, a proposal that caused a backlash amongst TNA members.

Delegates of TNA on Tuesday passed a resolution rejecting the deal that would have seen Kenyatta give up his presidential bid.

The delegates declared that the deal was not binding as it had not been sanctioned by any party organ and insisted that the National Delegates Conference remained the highest decision making organ of the party.

An official of the coalition said the nomination would still go on with or without the presence of Mudavadi.

In the meantime, ODM MP John Mbadi has called on Mudavadi to return to his original party if the agreement with Kenyatta is not honoured.

“We welcome our brother Musalia Mudavadi. We are still where he left us he can still come we don’t lack seats for him,” Mbadi told a news conference at the ODM headquarters.
