Joe Nyagah ditches the Orange for TNA

Joe Nyagah joins the Jubilee Alliance as William Ruto, Uhuru Kenyatta and Musalia Mudavadi watch/COURTESY

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 15 – A fifth member of the famous Pentagon that was firmly behind Raila Odinga’s drive for the presidency in 2007 has ditched the Orange Democratic Movement for its fierce opponent, the Jubilee Alliance.

Vuvuzelas and screams of jubilation rent the air at the Jevanjee Gardens in Nairobi when Cooperatives Development Minister Joe Nyagah made his way to the podium to announce his move, flanked by the alliance’s head honchos.

Nyagah, who was received by Deputy Premiers Uhuru Kenyatta, Musalia Mudavadi and Eldoret North MP William Ruto, said he had made the right decision and would ensure that the alliance made it to State House.

“I have never made a political mistake and even when they thought I had made one, I hadn’t. Did I make a political mistake?” he asked the crowd that united in saying ‘no’.

“I’m a very clever man,” he asserted before the vuvuzelas started blaring again.

And before Nyagah could even make his address, the master of ceremony asked him to hand over any branded materials that belonged to his former party to ceremoniously mark his big move.

Nyagah dutifully handed over Orange T-Shirts, caps and scarves and replaced them with red T-Shirts and caps symbolising his entrance to the Jubilee Alliance.

“The orange is rotten and we must get rid of it,” said the MC as he asked Nyagah to hand over ODM’s regalia.

Speaker after speaker rose to welcome Nyagah to the alliance with Kenyatta being the first.

He reminded Kenyans that the alliance had set its eyes firmly on the goal and would work hard towards realising its bid for the top job.

Kenyatta also promised Kenyans that the alliance would focus its agenda on employment and youth affairs, tackling insecurity alongside other developmental issues as opposed to abusive politics.

“We must make sure that our youths get jobs because this is what is important. Nyagah you must leave the politics of hate and tales,” said Kenyatta.

Ruto also lauded Nyagah for his choice saying he had made the right move.

While mentioning the names of five politicians, who constituted the Pentagon and who had all moved to the Jubilee Alliance, Ruto contended that the future of this country lay in the hands of the alliance.

He argued that the move by the former Pentagon members was proof that the ODM’s stronghold would dwindle.

“Charity Ngilu is in Jubilee, Joe Nyagah is in Jubilee, Najib Balala is in Jubilee, Musalia Mudavadi is in Jubilee and William Ruto is in Jubilee. Five of the six people that were in the ODM Pentagon have moved to Jubilee. Do the math,” he said as the crowds broke out in laughter.

Mudavadi also assured Nyagah of a solid place in the Jubilee Alliance saying it would take Kenya to greater heights.

He also asked Kenyans, who had not yet registered as voters, to go out and register adding that Kenyans must ensure that they do not go back to where they were in 2007/2008.

“We are now on track and we don’t want to make the wrong calculations. In 2007 the dead left their graves, came and voted before going back to their graves so we have to get things right and there will no extension of time,” he told the excited crowd.

After about 30 minutes, the leaders rose up in solidarity each holding a white dove in their palms before setting them free into the air to symbolise a peaceful campaign and transition period.

They then set off on their campaign trail to Malava, leaving the Jevanjee Gardens dotted with red caps and flags.
