Bumpy honeymoon for political marriages

TNA member Kareke Mbiuki threatened that some TNA members would troop to the rival Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) if coalition partners continued to push Kenyatta to step down for UDF’s Mudavadi/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 6 – Political marriages that were sealed for the March 4 general election are already hitting turbulence barely two days after the leaders vowed to work together.

On Thursday, at least 40 MPs in the Jubilee Coalition between The National Alliance (TNA), the United Democratic Forum (UDF) and United Republican Party (URP) threatened to pull out if Uhuru Kenyatta relinquished his presidential bid for Musalia Mudavadi.

TNA member Kareke Mbiuki threatened that some TNA members would troop to the rival Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) if coalition partners continued to push Kenyatta to step down for UDF’s Mudavadi.

“We are considering pulling out of the entire thing. Kenyatta is being pulled by many external forces and he is being cajoled by some powers to cede ground. If this continues, we will pull out, we will join ODM,” he told Capital FM News.

Mbiuki said the MPs allied to Kenyatta would only accept a scenario where he stepped down as a presidential candidate by losing an open nomination contest with his fellow Deputy Prime Minister.

“We are looking for fair, transparent and credible nominations between Musalia and Kenyatta but not leaving a seat for somebody.
Kenyatta has sacrificed a lot. We have invested a lot in Kenyatta’s candidacy,” the Tharaka Nithi MP asserted.

The Agriculture Assistant Minister fumed that TNA will not accept any forces to impose candidates on them.

“Any attempt to impose the Kibaki succession will boomerang. Alliances without valid negations are illegitimate. Shadowy mandarins extracting proxy State power to inherit themselves must be rejected. We’ll troop them to dejection and oblivion. TNA is unshakable,” he vowed.
Elsewhere, URP legislators poured scorn at an alliance that UDF had signed with independence party KANU before Mudavadi struck a deal with Kenyatta and Ruto on Tuesday evening.

Chepalungu MP Isaac Ruto, a staunch ally of URP leader William Ruto accused KANU elements of stirring confusion within the Jubilee Coalition.

“A certain party called KANU is claiming to have entered into coalition agreement with URP. It had approached us last week and we gave them an indication of what the conditions will be. They are causing confusion that they have an agreement with URP and that they will support a certain candidate. We are not at the stage yet,” he explained.

He continued to say, “We have not entered into any agreement with KANU. As far as we are concerned we are dealing with UDF and TNA, (not) KANU which has its own bad habits of creating confusion. They want to make it look like there is a rift. We are ready to compete with KANU. We do not recognise their strength.”
