NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 6 – Public Health and Sanitation Minister Beth Mugo on Thursday pulled out of Nairobi’s Senate race on health grounds.

Mugo who was accompanied by her husband Nicholas Mugo, son David, daughter-in-law Judy and her doctor Robert Mathenge told a news conference at her office that she will however now join the Jubilee Coalition National Campaign team to ensure that the TNA-URP-UDF coalition wins next year’s general election.

“It is the most difficult decision I have ever made. I must admit that I have been disappointed with the way things have turned out,” she added.

Her doctor who has been treating the minister confirmed that Mugo remains cancer free, but explained that they were concerned that a vigorous campaign was not good for her health.

“The campaign will mean that the minister will clock between 40 to 50 hours per week and on the basis of that we have advised her to drop out of the race,” Mathenge said.

“After consulting with doctors in the US where she was treated, it became quite clear that Mugo cannot work for more than eight hours in a day. We advised her to cut down on her working hours.” he explained.

He noted that working for more than 10 hours a day, even for a normal healthy person, is dangerous.

The Dagoretti MP who was expected to face Makadara MP Mike Sonko for the TNA ticket for the Nairobi County Senate appealed to city residents to elect someone who has the experience to tackle all the problems facing the town’s residents.

She cited the provision of water, quality education, and affordable housing to Nairobi residents as the key issues that must be addressed by the capital’s leadership.

In January, Mugo announced her condition but added that the cancerous lump in her breast had been successfully removed in a medical operation conducted in the US.

The cancer was diagnosed late last year during a routine medical check-up in Nairobi and disclosed to Mathenge of the Equatorial Heart and Blood Vessel Clinic.
