NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 28 – Tom Odongo has been appointed the Managing Trustee of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for three years.

Odongo whose appointment takes effect from November 28, has been the acting boss since February this year.

He took over from Alex Kazongo who was sacked by the Fund’s board over what it termed as failure to meet expectations, leading to non-renewal of this term.

Odongo was appointed by Labour Minister John Munyes from a list of three candidates whose names had been forwarded by the NSSF board, which conducted interviews.

“I have just been notified of my appointment and I am very glad. I know it was a competitive process and with the little experience I have so far, I look forward to collaborating with all the stakeholders to move the Fund to greater heights. Now all I am waiting for is the formal letter from the minister,” Odongo, who is out of the country on official duty, told Capital Business on phone.

David Bonyi and Kennedy Odondi were the other two board nominees from a list of seven who had been interviewed for the position.

Bonyi is currently the Company Secretary for the Retirement Benefits Authority while Odondi is serving as a Principal Officer at the Tunis-based Africa Development Bank (AfDB).

Odongo was appointed by the minister through a gazette notice dated November 27 and will in office for the next three years.

Apart from being on an acting capacity for the last nine months at the Sh100 billion-worth public pension fund, he has also been the Fund’s General Manager for Investments and was previously the Head of Finance at the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB).

He has 16 years of experience in the field of finance, investments and project management and holds an MBA degree from the University of Nairobi.
