Maalim who is also the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly claimed that Dujis MP Aden Duale was almost shot in the mayhem in Garissa.
“The place looks like a scene from Syria!” Maalim told his fellow legislators on Tuesday as he demanded a ministerial statement from the Ministry of Defence.
He questioned whether constitutional provisions had been followed in getting the military involved in maintaining law and order which requires Parliament’s approval.
Maalim claimed Garissa businessmen had made colossal losses following the mayhem on Monday and Tuesday when security agencies mounted a crackdown in the northeastern town.
On Monday, three KDF officers were shot by assailants along Garissa’s Kismayu street as they tried to repair their vehicle’s tyre.
Tension built up immediately after security officers were deployed on the ground to trail the suspects. Residents accused security officers of harassing them with no justified cause, allegations that security forces have dismissed.
The town of Garissa, which is the headquarter of North Eastern province, has of late experienced increased cases of insecurity especially from October last year when the government sent its troops to the neighbouring Somalia to help root out the Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab militia.
Meanwhile, Internal Security Minister Katoo Ole Metito is on Wednesday expected to brief MPs on the activities of Kenya’s troops a year after Parliament authorised the military to deploy in pursuit of the Al Shabaab terror network.
“I have accordingly directed that the minister makes a report to the House by way of a statement tomorrow (Wednesday) during the afternoon sitting,” Marende said.
