NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 24 – Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has called on Kenyans holding illegal arms to surrender them to the government, maintaining that arms are supposed to be handled by the security agents only or those licensed.
He cautioned leaders against politicising security issues, saying leaders should respect decisions made by the Cabinet.
“The security of Kenyans is paramount and nobody should play with it,” he added.
Musyoka called on leaders to support the government’s efforts in disarming those keeping illegal arms, saying the security of all Kenyans must be maintained.
His remarks came as joint units of the Kenya Police and the Kenya Defence Forces are involved in a massive security operation in Baragoi, Samburu County where 42 police officers were killed by bandits two week ago.
On voter registration, the Vice President urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to inform Kenyans in advance the days and places of registration especially in areas where machines are being shared to ensure no one is left out during the exercise.
The process will take 30 days followed by 15 days of voter register verification.
The commission announced the centres where the voter registration will be conducted will be opened from 8am to 5pm including Saturdays and Sundays.
Musyoka called on Kenyans to register in large numbers in order to elect the leaders of their choice come next general election.
Musyoka alluded confidence that Kenyans will elect him as the fourth president of Kenya after Mwai Kibaki retires next year.
He said Kenya requires a leader who will unite all Kenyans, noting that he is ready to continue with the pace of development that president Kibaki has started.
The Vice President called on Kenyans to vote for the leaders who have good development record, non corrupt and shun tribalism, saying they should coexist with one another irrespective of where one comes from.
The Vice President who was accompanied by his wife, Pauline Kalonzo made the remarks after attending the wedding of Symon Njagi Muchiri and Jane Wanja at the All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi.
The groom is Musyoka’s nephew from Kirinyaga County.
