NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 8 – The much anticipated interviews for the Inspector General of Police are set to kick off on Friday at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.
The chairman of the National Police Service Commission Johnston Kavuludi said the interviews will be conducted in public.
Members of the public have been submitting petitions on the suitability of the candidates since last week when names of nine short listed candidates were revealed.
A time-table released by the commission shows that former Nyanza Provincial Police chief Grace Kaindi who heads the Kenya Airports Police Unit will be the first candidate to face the panel from 8am.
She will be followed by former Provincial Criminal Investigations Officer Swaleh Slim who will be followed by Provincial Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan.
Former police officer Joseph Ashimala, David Kimaiyo of the Small Arms Secretariat and a civilian John Patrick Owino will be interviewed on Saturday.
On Monday, the panel will interview Peter Macharia Mwangi of the State Law Office, Police Spokesman Eric Kiraithe and Mary Oyugi-Kaol of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol).
The commission is racing against time to recruit an Inspector General and two deputies by the end of next month.
Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the commission will carry out interviews for candidates shortlisted for the post of Deputy Inspector General of police.
Those short listed for the position include CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro, King’ori Mwangi who is currently spearheading reforms at Police Headquarters, Jasper Nyauma Ombati – currently serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and Marcela Andanje.
Other include Officer in Charge of Railways Police Judy Jebet Ndeda, Mohammed Ibrahim Amin from the CID, former policeman Stanley Cheruiyot, Dido Mamo Galgalo and Zipporah Gatiria Mboroki.
The commission will also interview nine candidates for Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Administration Police.
They include Samuel Arachi (Administration Police commandant), Omar Shurie Abdi (Administration Police Training College), Dalmas Otieno Nyakembo Ochalo, Margaret Nyambura Karanja and Eusebius Laibuta (Administration Police Personnel).
Fred Mwei (Administration Police), David Karungu Ngori, Alexander Kyenze Munyao and Deputy CID Director Gideon Muoki Kimilu complete the list.
The short-listing was done from 102 candidates who applied to be considered for the post of Inspector General, 39 for the Kenya Police Service and 39 for the Administration Police.
Some candidates have protested against the criteria used to shortlist them because most of them were left out of the top job which they had applied for.
There are those threatening to pull out of the interview, claiming that the commission appears to have made a decision on who to serve for the coveted positions.
