JOHANNESBURG, Nov 6 – The driver in the fatal crash that killed Nelson Mandela’s great-grandchild in 2010 was acquitted on Tuesday of all charges related to her death, due to lack of evidence, his lawyer said.

Sizwe Mankazana was charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol after he lost control of his vehicle, killing 13-year-old Zenani Mandela.

The accident happened on the eve of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, when the pair were returning from a concert in Soweto.

Mandela missed the opening of the event cup because of the tragedy.

According to Mankazana’s lawyer, Hulme Scholes, the magistrate said there was no evidence “which could reasonably lead to a conviction on any charge.”

Mankazana is the son of Zwelakhe Mankazana, the partner of Mandela’s daughter Zenani Mandela-Dlamini, who is the country’s ambassador to Argentina.

“The tragedy is that we will all live the rest of our lives without her. I am thankful that the trial has come to an end,” Mankazana said in a statement.
