Blast wounds two in Kenyan capital

Bomb experts collect samples from the scene of blast/MIKE KARIUKI

NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 6 – Two people were wounded on Tuesday morning when an explosive device went off at a bridge in Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate.

The man and woman were crossing the bridge on a road linking the estate to Jogoo road.

“Two people sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital,” Wilfred Mbithi, head of police operations in Nairobi said.

“We suspect it is an Improvised Explosive Device (IED),” Mbithi said after getting a brief from bomb disposal experts who combed the scene.

The powerful explosion also damaged a matatu parked on the roadside, shattering its windows.

“It was a very powerful explosion,” Mbithi said.

Another victim who sustained injuries in the explosion said he was crossing the road when it went off.

“I really don’t know what happened, I just heard a loud blast and as I ran, people shouted at me saying I was bleeding,” the man who only identified himself as John said, before he was assisted onto an ambulance.

He had received first aid at a clinic nearby.

“The two people wounded have been treated at a clinic but we want them taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialised treatment,” Mbithi said.

The bridge and a section of 1st Avenue in the estate were closed traffic for several hours as detectives analysed the scene.

Mbithi said an investigation would be conducted to establish if the incident was linked to Al Shabaab militants who have vowed reprisals in Kenya to protest a military incursion in their country.

Kenya has suffered a series of blasts since October last year when the military crossed into the lawless country to pursue the Al Shabaab militants who had been blamed for a series of kidnappings on the Kenyan soil-including of foreigners.

Another attack occurred at a church in Garissa on Sunday, killing an Administration Police officer. Six other officers were wounded in the attack.
