NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 8 – Nine people were killed in a road accident on Thursday morning when a matatu collided head-on with a police truck near Limuru.

Police said four of the victims died on the spot while five others succumbed to injuries in hospital.

“We have lost nine people and five others are admitted to hospital,” Deputy Traffic Police chief Joseph Kimaru said. Some of those injured were being treated at the Kijabe mission hospital.

He said the matatu driver was among those killed in the accident that occurred at about 9am.

Kimaru said the accident at Ngarariga occurred when the truck tried to avoid hitting a separate matatu that was overtaking on the Nakuru-Naivasha highway.

“We have been told that driver of the police lorry was trying to avoid hitting another matatu when the accident occurred. We are yet to establish what exactly happened,” he said.

Earlier in the morning, two other people working at a local security firm had died when their vehicle lost control and rolled several times, not very away from the scene of the accident that claimed nine lives.

Road accidents are common on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, particularly on the stretch to Naivasha which is usually characterised by poor visibility due to fog.

“We advise motorists to be extra careful when driving on this road. Some motorists are fond of driving at very high speed to an extent they cannot control the vehicle when faced with an emergency situation,” Kimaru said.
