Kibaki said he is confident that there will be complete peace in Somalia following the capture of the Port of Kismayu from the hands of Al Shabaab militia by the Kenyan Defence Forces operating under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
He said Kenya and other countries neighbouring Somalia will also enjoy peace after dealing with all terrorists.
“I wish to re-state that the prosperity of our country is hedged on the stability of our neighbouring countries. We will therefore continue taking steps that guarantee our security. I once again salute members of the Kenya Defence Forces and other AMISOM forces for their continued success in stabilising the nation of Somalia,” said Kibaki.
He has, however, called on Kenyans to remain vigilant and collaborate with the police to deal with terrorists.
“The forces of terror will seek to fight back. We should all work closely with members of the security forces, to ensure that we secure our nation,” Kibaki urged.
“To the people of Somalia and those in the Diaspora, say no to agents of terror and prepare for the hard work of national reconstruction. Kenya stands to be counted as a true friend and ally of the government and people of Somalia and will actively support the reconstruction process,” said the Head of State.
Kibaki’s statement comes two days after the police issued an alert following intelligence reports of imminent terror attacks in the country since the Kenya Defence Forces entered Kismayu port in Somalia.
Kibaki who was speaking on Thursday during the opening of this year’s Nairobi International Trade Fair also appealed to Kenyans to register as voters to enable them take part in the coming elections, when the exercise kicks off next month.
“We must now consolidate the gains we have made in the various sectors by ensuring that we have credible and transparent leaders at the helm of our local and national institutions,” he said.
The theme of this year’s trade fair is “Enhancing Technology and Industry for Food Security and National Growth”.
“This is in tandem with our aspiration of making agriculture a prosperous and competitive sector. I am pleased that over the last decade the sector has undergone tremendous changes in both practice and value,” said Kibaki.
