ODM primaries set for December 4 to 6

A National Delegates Convention will be held in November confirm Odinga as the party’s presidential candidate/CFM-File

NAIVASHA, Kenya, Oct 5 – The Orange Democratic Movement will hold party primaries between December 4 and 6 ahead of the March 4, 2013 general elections.

A two day joint National Executive Committee and Parliamentary Group retreat in Naivasha has also agreed that a National Delegates Convention be held on November 29 and 30 to confirm Raila Odinga as the party’s presidential candidate.

“This joint NEC/PG meeting resolves that the National Delegates Convention (NDC) nominates the Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga as the party’s presidential candidate,” Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o said.

The party primaries will see the party nominate candidates for the six elective posts of President, Governor, Senator, Member of Parliament, County Women Representatives and County Ward Representatives.

The party’s National Election Board will meet aspirants for the party ticket for various electoral positions in Nairobi on Wednesday next week for consultations, induction and engagement in party campaigns.

The meeting for aspirants for County Representatives will however be held at the Counties at a later date.

Nyong’o says the meeting has also directed the recently restructured party National Elections Board to ensure free and fair primaries.

Party supporters have indicated that nominations could be the major challenge for ODM and they are seeking assurance for a fair exercise.

Foreign Affairs Assistant Minister Richard Onyonka has expressed his concerns over the party nominations after Odinga’s former presidential campaign manager James Ongwae’s declared he will vie for the Kisii governorship.

ODM Nominated MP Rachel Shebesh and Sotik MP Joyce Laboso have decamped to Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta’s TNA and William Ruto’s United Republican Party respectively.

Part of the differences between Odinga and the disgruntled members of ODM revolve largely around nominations, which they claim are being influenced by the premier’s wife Ida Odinga.
