ABUJA, Oct 18 – Nigerian First Lady Patience Jonathan, who had been receiving medical treatment in Germany for an undisclosed illness suspected to have been food poisoning, returned home on Wednesday.

Local media have been rife with speculation over the 55-year-old first lady’s condition, but officials have declined to respond to requests for comment.

“I did not have a terminal illness or cosmetic surgery,” she told reporters at Abuja airport on arrival, broadcast live on state television. “I thank God Almighty for bringing me back… God has a plan for all of us.”

She was welcomed back by a crowd of supporters along with drumming and dancing. She flew to Germany for medical treatment in August.

Patience Jonathan is the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, who came to power in 2010 following the death of his predecessor Umaru Yar’Adua before winning 2011 elections.

In July, the first lady was sworn into a senior government post in the oil-rich state of Bayelsa, her husband’s home state.
