Madzayo recalls horror machete MRC attack

“I should put this in the room,” he says looking down at his phone, “it could get in the way.”

“They might want some tea. I should make some,” Madzayo’s wife says hurriedly making her way to the kitchen.

I’m left staring at the smiling couple on the wall together with their daughter. Across the room is another picture of Madzayo with his hands around his pregnant wife’s belly.

“Are you afraid of going back on the campaign trail?” I ask Madzayo as he walks back into the room.

“No. In fact, I’m rearing to go. If they kill the good leaders and refuse the children to take part in the national examinations who do they expect to take up leadership… say they do successfully manage to secede? Standard two drop outs?”

“Their grievances however, are genuine and as leaders from the region, we’re talking about them.”

So what does he think of the Members of Parliament awarding themselves a severance package worth Sh2.1 billion the same day he was attacked I ask?

He shifts uncomfortably in his seat, “I don’t think I’m prepared to answer that,” he says. After a moment’s reflection he says; “They’re just looking for money for campaigns.”

Even given the cuts on his head, Madzayo doesn’t regret entering the political arena. “It’s part of the price you pay,” he says, “but it was almost too high a price to pay,” he adds as his wife walks back into the room.

“What if you don’t win?”

“I’ll win.”

His wife’s phone rings.

“They’re here,” she says.

They get up to welcome the Prime Minister and after receiving a card and a basket of fruit, Madzayo takes off his bandage to show Odinga the injuries he sustained.

The Prime Minister will give his statement later, one of his officials says as he ushers us out of the house. It’s time to leave but the politics continues.
