MALINDI, Kenya, Oct 4 – A couple and their six children are among eight people who died in a fire that occurred at the staff quarters of Malindi High School on Thursday night.

The school’s deputy headmaster, Godfrey Kituku, perished with his wife and six children, among them one-and-a-half year-old twins.

Two of his children died on their way to hospital soon after students of Malindi High school managed to rescue them from the tragic fire.

The students broke windows to gain access to the quarters.

Witnesses say they heard a blast around midnight at the staff quarters moments after a power blackout.

Witnesses said that soon after the blast flames quickly engulfed the house.

The school head teacher Emanuel Kitsao confirmed the incident and said that the fire took more than four hours before students put it out.

He said a gas cylinder and two motorcycles parked at the home could have fuelled the fire.

There was grief at the school as two maids reported to work at the staff quarters only to find their bosses had perished in the fire.

One of the maids Mary Rua broke down in tears and had to be assisted by Red Cross officials.
